How to Organize Bathroom Drawers and Cabinets Like a Pro

If you’re like me, clutter can cause added stress and nobody needs more stress in their life. I needed to fix this and it took me a very long time (like years) to master, which is the art of organizing and maintaining.

Let’s start with our master bathroom drawers. Having an organized bathroom vanity can be a game-changer, making your life easier and your bathroom look fabulous. So, here are some effective strategies to help you declutter and transform your space.

Decluttering: Bye, Clutter!

Okay, first things first – let's niche down. I do this every other month. The first step is to empty that drawer and take a good look at its contents. Get rid of any expired or unused products, duplicates, or things you simply don't use anymore. Getting rid of the excess will make the organization process 10x faster.

Easy Tips for Getting Rid of Bathroom Clutter:

When deciding what bathroom products to keep or get rid of, consider these guidelines:

  • Check Expiration Dates: Discard any products that are past their expiration date.

  • Assess Frequency of Use: Keep items you use regularly, and let go of those rarely used.

  • Quality and Condition: If a product is deteriorating or has changed in texture, it's time to part with it.

  • Duplicates: If you have multiples of the same product, keep one and give away the rest.

  • Skin Sensitivity: Products that irritate your skin or cause allergies should be tossed.

  • Storage Space: If it's taking up valuable space and you don't use it, it's time to declutter.

  • Multi-Functionality: Favor products that serve multiple purposes to minimize clutter.

  • Sentimental Value: Keep items that hold sentimental value but don't go overboard.

Remember, the goal is to have a bathroom stocked with products you truly need and use regularly, keeping it clutter-free and organized.

Categorize and Sort: Divide and Conquer

To make life simpler, start by dividing your bathroom essentials into categories of similar items.

We're talking skincare, haircare, oral care, cosmetics, grooming products. Sorting your items into categories will help you see what you have and make it easier to find what you need quickly.

Find a Home: You get a home, you get a home, you get a home!!

Now that everything is separated into piles, it’s time to find everyone a home. This is where you are going to decide what goes where. Cabinets, drawers, or on the countertop. Keep reading for some ideas for where to put your bathroom products.

What Should Go in Bathroom Drawers?

Think of small items here. Especially if you have shallow drawers. Here are the best things to store in your bathroom vanity drawers:

  • Toiletries: Keep everyday essentials like toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, and razors in a drawer for easy access. Keep these in your top drawer.

  • Makeup: Use a drawer for makeup products, brushes, and tools to keep them organized.

  • Hair Products: Store hair ties, clips, and hairbrushes in a designated drawer.

  • Medications: Keep prescription and over-the-counter medications in a locked drawer for safety. The bottom drawer is great for this or better yet, keep them in your medicine cabinet.

  • Contact Lenses/Glasses: If you wear contacts or glasses, keep them in a protected drawer.

  • Jewelry: Small jewelry items can be organized in a drawer with compartments or a jewelry tray.

What Should Go in Bathroom Cabinets?

If you have deep drawers, you can easily store some of the following bathroom cabinet larger items in them such as hair products (tools and hairspray, for example).

  • Cleaning Supplies: Store cleaning products, sponges, and brushes in a cabinet away from personal items.

  • Towels and Linens: Keep clean towels, bathrobes, and extra linens in a cabinet or linen closet.

  • Toilet Paper and Tissues: Store extra rolls of toilet paper and tissue boxes in a cabinet.

  • Hair Dryer and Styling Tools: Place hair dryers, curling irons, and straighteners in a cabinet with heat-resistant holders.

  • Personal Care Products: Larger bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash can be stored in cabinets.

  • First Aid Kit: Maintain a well-organized first aid kit in a bathroom cabinet.

What Should Stay on the Bathroom Counter?

If you have a small space for storage in your small bathroom, some stuff is going to have to stay on top of the bathroom countertop and not inside of the designated bathroom storage. Here are some convenient things to keep on the countertop to save up so much space in your cabinets and drawers.

  • Hand Soap: A decorative soap dispenser can be a functional and aesthetically pleasing addition to your counter.

  • Skincare Products: If you use a daily face wash or cleanser, it's convenient to have it on the counter.

  • Moisturizer: Place your daily facial moisturizer on the counter for easy use after washing your face.

  • Cotton Balls or Swabs: Store these in attractive containers for quick access.

  • Towel or Hand Towel: Hang a hand towel on a hook or bar for drying hands.

  • Perfume or Cologne: If you use fragrance daily, display your favorite scent on the counter.

Storage Solutions for Bathroom Drawers

Let's maximize that drawer space, shall we? I have a few bathroom drawer organization ideas that I think you will love. A great way to do this is with the following bathroom drawer organizers:

a. Drawer Dividers: Use dividers to create separate spaces for each category. Bonus points for these adjustable dividers that can adapt to your changing needs. Use them to break up drawers as needed. These are specifically good for drawers that are not deep in dimension.

b. Clear Containers: Clear, stackable plastic containers. They're perfect for storing smaller items like hair ties, makeup brushes, or travel-size items. Not only do they keep things tidy, but they also let you see exactly what's inside, so you'll never have to go on a treasure hunt again. Plus, you can quickly wash in the dishwasher if need be.

c. Drawer Trays: My personal favorite, is drawer trays or stackable inserts. It’s kind of like Tetris when playing with the configuration, but visually it’s incredibly satisfying to see your items neatly packed like a bento box. They are the perfect solution for organized bathroom drawers and one of the easiest ways to keep up with your bathroom organization.

d. Drawer Liners: Hate cleaning? Invest in some drawer liners to protect your drawers and make cleaning a breeze.

Storage Solutions for Bathroom Cabinets

a. Drawer and Cabinet Organizers: These come in various shapes and sizes, including stackable plastic bins, dividers, and pull-out trays, helping you maximize your cabinet space and keep products neatly separated.

b. Under-Sink Storage Shelves: These adjustable shelves fit under the sink, providing extra vertical storage space and a great place for items like cleaning supplies, toiletries, or beauty products.

c. Cabinet Door Organizers: These handy organizers can be mounted on the inside of cabinet doors, perfect for storing items like hair tools, cleaning supplies, or even toiletries in clear pockets for easy visibility.

d. Lazy Susans: these are awesome idea for keeping your bathroom organized and usable at the same time. No more sorting through your bathroom essentials, instead, you place them on a lazy Susan and let them come to you!

How to Maintain Your Organized Bathroom Cabinets and Drawers

This is the hard part. Keep it looking this way. I take maybe 20 min 1x a month to quickly go through and remove products I do not need/use. Cleaning the plastic drawers is simple just by popping them into the dishwasher. A little effort goes a long way in maintaining the work you already put in.

I hope you find these products useful in your next organizing project. They have made our bathroom that much more efficient and dare I say less chaotic.  I know it’ll work for you too!
